Math
David Cox's Farming Project and overview of the project - A single middle school project or unit based on ten problems relating to farming that cover a wide variety of standards. The tasks are well-defined, but could be made into ill-defined and more open-ended ones. PBLU's Mazer Tag Project - A single geometry project involving lasers and obstacles such as mirrors. You might sign up to download the project. Emergent Math's Problem Based Curriculum Maps - Math problems categorized by topic and then arranged by standard. These problems are shorted and more directed problems, as opposed to big projects. NCTM's Illuminations lessons - Detailed lessons and lesson plans categorized by grade and standard. They are more structured than most PBL lessons. Mathalicious - Lesson plans and materials for a variety of math topics, often including a video or presentation to launch the lesson. The problems are generally shorter and more directed than most PBL lessons. The site offers relevant free sample lessons, and requires a subscription fee to access their entire library of lessons. Highly regarded in the online math ed community. Dan Meyer's Three Act Math Tasks - The first act is a video or situation that raises a question that can be answered mathematically; students have to ask for the information they need. In Act Two students get that information to solve the problem. And Act Three shows a video of the solution. |

University of Delaware's PBL Clearinghouse - You have to apply to gain access, but based on their sample lessons (see Science in next column), the site looks promising. Salvadori Center's lesson plans ($5 each) - Each lesson plan has the full plan, sample activities, diagrams, interdisciplinary connections, and a list of online resources relevant to the topic. Houghton Mifflin's Project Based Learning Space - Five projects with information for teachers about how to guide students through the project. Does not contain full set of materials, such as rubrics, but has enough information to get you started. Envision School's Project Exchange Curriculum Library - A short list (for math and science, at least) of projects, including entry event, driving question, activities, and assessment. The Virtual Schoolhouse: Projects - A short list of projects that include a good amount of materials and information for each one. Only a few math and science projects provided. |
ScienceIndiana University lesson plans - Biology projects organized by topic (e.g.: cell and molecular biology, genetics). Some lessons contain more information than others, but there is a wide variety of topics covered on this website. NASA's Space Life Sciences Classroom Topics - Scroll down to see the Classroom Topics and click on one to get to lesson plans. A great range of activities. University of Delaware's PBL Sample Problems - Gives problems and context for students to consider, but does not provide an actual lesson plan or many resources. |
